Ubud surprised us on our third visit in a way it hadn’t on the first two — not because it had changed, but because we finally slowed down enough to let it work on us. The cooking class our first morning led to a conversation with our teacher Wayan about Canang Sari offerings, which led to an invitation to watch his family’s temple ceremony that afternoon. Ubud operates this way: the slower you move, the more it opens to you.

Geographically, Ubud sits in the hills of central Bali, 400 meters above sea level, in a river valley where the Wos and Campuhan rivers meet. The elevation keeps it slightly cooler than the coast — mornings can feel almost cold by Bali standards. Terraced rice fields descend from the hillsides into steep jungle valleys, and the view from the ridge trails above the town reveals a landscape that has barely changed in centuries, even as the restaurants and galleries below have multiplied.

The Rice Terraces

Tegallalang Rice Terraces, 8km north of Ubud center, are the most photographed landscape in Bali — and justifiably so. The terraces cascade down a steep valley in an intricate system of subak (traditional Balinese water management), a UNESCO-recognized cultural practice that has regulated water flows between farming communities for over 1,000 years. Visit before 8am or after 4pm to avoid tour groups. The rice harvest cycle means the paddies are at different stages at different times of year — ask locally which terrace has the most brilliant green growth.

Campuhan Ridge Walk, starting at Pura Gunung Lebah temple near the main road, is free and equally rewarding. The 9km path follows a narrow ridge between two river valleys, through jungle and rice fields, with almost no tourists before 7am. Carry water and wear good shoes — the path narrows to single-file in places.

Food

Ubud’s food scene ranges from IDR 20,000 nasi campur (rice with mixed sides) at Warung Ibu Mangku to IDR 300,000-per-head tasting menus at Locavore, which has featured consistently on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants. We ate best at the middle: Warung Babi Guling Ibu Oka for suckling pig (arrive before 1pm — it runs out), Mosaic Restaurant in a garden setting with Balinese-influenced cuisine, and the night market on Jalan Gautama for satay and corn fritters under string lights.

For breakfast, Seniman Coffee Studio on Jalan Sri Wedari serves exceptional single-origin Sumatran and Flores beans. Bali Buda, a health-food institution since 1997, does outstanding smoothie bowls and fresh turmeric lattes — IDR 35,000–65,000.

Temples and Ceremony

Tirta Empul, 12km northeast of Ubud, is Bali’s most sacred spring temple — devotees queue to immerse themselves in the holy spring pools in a ritual purification ceremony. Arrive before 8am to experience the ceremony without crowds. Dress modestly; sarongs provided at entrance (IDR 20,000).

Pura Kehen, further northeast near Bangli, is undervisited and extraordinary — a clifftop temple complex with an 11-tiered meru tower reflected in a sacred lake. Entry IDR 30,000.

Practical Tips

Avoiding the crowds: The Instagram spots (Tegallalang, Monkey Forest entrance, the Campuhan ridge) are genuinely crowded from 9am to 3pm. An early start rewards you with cooler temperatures and emptier paths.

Wellness: Ubud is Southeast Asia’s wellness capital. Half-day Balinese massage and spa packages run IDR 250,000–500,000 at dozens of spas. Yoga Barn offers daily classes IDR 150,000; The Yoga Shala has excellent Ashtanga instruction. Ayurvedic consultations and traditional Balinese healing (with a local balian, or healer) can be arranged through reputable tour agencies.

🎒 Gear We Recommend for Ubud

Reef-Safe Mineral Sunscreen

Raja Ampat and Komodo marine parks strictly enforce reef-safe sunscreen. Zinc oxide protects the coral that makes these places extraordinary.

Dry Bag (20L)

Island hopping in Komodo means open boat transfers. One wave and your camera is gone. This is the single most important gear item for Indonesia.

Quick-Dry Travel Towel

Bali villas and beach resorts provide towels. Gili Islands guesthouses, temple visits, and Komodo boat tours often don't. Dries in 20 minutes in the tropical sun.

Waterproof Phone Pouch

Nusa Penida snorkeling, Bali rice paddy walks in the rain, Komodo boat spray. Your phone sees water daily in Indonesia.

Universal Travel Adapter

Indonesia uses Type C and F plugs (European round 2-pin). US/UK/Australian plugs don't fit without an adapter. Get a universal with USB-A and USB-C ports.
