We had been warned that Komodo would be expensive and crowded, and that the dragons would be disappointing — like a zoo. None of that was true. The dragons we encountered on Komodo Island were massive and utterly prehistoric-looking, moving with a deliberate slowness that made the sudden speed of their strike demonstrations by our ranger all the more terrifying. Pink Beach, which we’d expected to be mildly pink, was actually, unmistakably pink — the ground genuinely glows crimson in the morning light. And the diving at Batu Bolong was the best ocean experience of our collective travel lives.

Komodo National Park covers 1,817 square kilometers of land and sea across 29 islands in the Lesser Sunda Islands chain. It sits where the Indian and Pacific Oceans meet, creating the extraordinary nutrient-rich upwellings that support its marine life. The result is a concentration of biodiversity rarely matched anywhere on Earth: over 1,000 fish species, 260 coral species, Orcas, dugongs, sperm whales, and the manta rays that drift over sites like Manta Alley in lazy, permanent circles.

Komodo Dragons

Varanus komodoensis exists nowhere else on Earth — Komodo, Rinca, Flores, Gili Motang, and Padar islands in the national park hold the full wild population of approximately 3,000 individuals. A male Komodo dragon can reach 3 meters in length and 70kg in weight. They’re venomous — their saliva contains anticoagulant venom that prevents prey’s blood from clotting — and surprisingly fast in short bursts (20km/h).

Viewing requires a licensed ranger escort (mandatory). Rinca Island is generally considered better than Komodo Island for guaranteed sightings as the population is denser relative to the island’s size. The best morning treks (7–9am) regularly encounter 10–20 dragons near the ranger station. Entry fee IDR 250,000 weekdays, IDR 500,000 weekends. No exceptions.

Pink Beach

Pink Beach (Pantai Merah) gets its color from a mix of white coral sand and pulverized red organ pipe coral (Tubipora musica). At sunrise, the beach glows orange-pink before shifting to a more subtle rose tone. The water is crystal clear and excellent for snorkeling — giant clams and blue-spotted rays are common just meters from shore. Most day tours include Pink Beach as a morning swim stop.

Padar Island

The 30-minute sunrise hike to Padar Island’s panoramic viewpoint produces one of Indonesia’s most recognizable photographs — a three-fingered bay viewed from above, the hills rolling in every direction. The panorama from the 170-meter-high ridge includes three differently colored beaches (white, black, and pink) depending on conditions. Most day tours include Padar in the afternoon when the light falls into the western bay.

Practical Tips

Day tours vs. liveaboards: Day tours (IDR 600,000–1,500,000/person) cover the major sights. For diving, a liveaboard (from IDR 3,000,000/person/day) reaches remote sites impossible from a day boat and allows night diving. The Blue Manta, Komodo Dragon Boat, and Seahorse Komodo are well-regarded operators.

Labuan Bajo: The gateway town is more developed than it was five years ago. Book accommodation in advance for July–August. The harbor front has excellent seafood restaurants — the catch comes in each evening. Budget IDR 80,000–200,000/person for dinner with fresh fish grilled to order.

🎒 Gear We Recommend for Komodo

Reef-Safe Mineral Sunscreen

Raja Ampat and Komodo marine parks strictly enforce reef-safe sunscreen. Zinc oxide protects the coral that makes these places extraordinary.

Dry Bag (20L)

Island hopping in Komodo means open boat transfers. One wave and your camera is gone. This is the single most important gear item for Indonesia.

Quick-Dry Travel Towel

Bali villas and beach resorts provide towels. Gili Islands guesthouses, temple visits, and Komodo boat tours often don't. Dries in 20 minutes in the tropical sun.

Waterproof Phone Pouch

Nusa Penida snorkeling, Bali rice paddy walks in the rain, Komodo boat spray. Your phone sees water daily in Indonesia.

Universal Travel Adapter

Indonesia uses Type C and F plugs (European round 2-pin). US/UK/Australian plugs don't fit without an adapter. Get a universal with USB-A and USB-C ports.
