Bandung caught us completely off-guard on our first visit. We’d allocated two days as a quick stop between Jakarta and Yogyakarta and found ourselves rearranging our entire itinerary to stay four. The city has a creativity and livability that most Indonesian cities lack — wide tree-lined avenues from its Dutch colonial origins, a thriving arts and music scene (Bandung is the acknowledged birthplace of Indonesian indie rock), and a café culture that rivals Melbourne’s specialty coffee scene in depth if not scale.

Located 150km southeast of Jakarta at 768 meters elevation, Bandung sits in a highland basin surrounded by volcanoes. The air is noticeably cooler than the coast — a relief after Jakarta’s heat — and the volcanic landscapes within 30–60 minutes of the city center make it simultaneously an urban destination and a base for extraordinary natural excursions.

Volcanic Landscapes

Tangkuban Perahu, 30km north of the city center, is an active stratovolcano accessible by road to within 200 meters of the main crater rim. The crater — large enough to walk around in 20 minutes — steams continuously and occasionally produces minor ash eruptions. Entry IDR 200,000 (foreign visitors); parking IDR 30,000. Visit before 10am when mist is clearest and the sulfurous smell most dramatic.

Kawah Putih (White Crater), 48km south of Bandung, is a completely different experience — a collapsed caldera lake filled with turquoise-white sulfuric water at 2,194 meters elevation. The color shifts between milky white, pale green, and turquoise depending on volcanic activity levels. Entry IDR 50,000; the drive up is steep and spectacular through pine forest. The crater is best photographed in the morning before afternoon cloud rolls in.

The Braga District

The historic Braga Street (Jalan Braga) is Bandung’s equivalent of a Dutch colonial boulevard — early 20th-century buildings with art deco facades housing cafés, galleries, and boutiques. Café Braga City Walk, housed in a 1920s building with original tilework, is the classic stop. The Bandung Geological Museum on Jalan Diponegoro (free, extraordinary volcanic rock collection) and the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) campus — designed by Dutch architect Henri Maclaine Pont in a Sundanese-European hybrid style — are the architectural highlights.

Food

Sundanese cuisine is clean, fresh, and herb-forward — a significant contrast to the heavier, saltier cuisine of Central Java. Nasi timbel (rice steamed in banana leaf) with assorted proteins and lalapan (fresh raw vegetables) is the regional staple. Warung Nasi Ampera and Nasi Bancakan near Jalan Trunojoyo are city institutions. For upscale Sundanese dining, Ponyo Resto in the Lembang highland area north of the city offers spectacular volcano views over traditional rice table spreads.

The café scene around Jalan Setiabudi and Jalan Progo is extraordinary — single-origin Sumatran and Flores coffee from Bandung roasters like Kopi Joss, Nako Coffee, and Koffie Braga. Prices IDR 25,000–55,000.

Practical Tips

Getting around: Grab and Gojek work well. For Tangkuban Perahu and Kawah Putih, hire a private driver for IDR 300,000–500,000 for a day trip — public access is technically possible but very inconvenient.

Shopping: Weekends see Jakartans flooding Bandung for factory outlet shopping — arrive on Thursday or Friday for calmer conditions and better bargaining position. EQ and Secret Factory Outlet are the most reliable for quality branded merchandise.

🎒 Gear We Recommend for Bandung

Reef-Safe Mineral Sunscreen

Raja Ampat and Komodo marine parks strictly enforce reef-safe sunscreen. Zinc oxide protects the coral that makes these places extraordinary.

Dry Bag (20L)

Island hopping in Komodo means open boat transfers. One wave and your camera is gone. This is the single most important gear item for Indonesia.

Quick-Dry Travel Towel

Bali villas and beach resorts provide towels. Gili Islands guesthouses, temple visits, and Komodo boat tours often don't. Dries in 20 minutes in the tropical sun.

Waterproof Phone Pouch

Nusa Penida snorkeling, Bali rice paddy walks in the rain, Komodo boat spray. Your phone sees water daily in Indonesia.

Universal Travel Adapter

Indonesia uses Type C and F plugs (European round 2-pin). US/UK/Australian plugs don't fit without an adapter. Get a universal with USB-A and USB-C ports.
