Where to Stay in Bali

🌾

Ubud

Culture, rice paddies, and arts

The best base for a first Bali trip. Ubud puts you in the cultural heart of the island — Balinese dance, cooking classes, jungle walks, the iconic rice terraces.

Do This
Campuhan Ridge Walk at 6am before breakfast. Tegallalang Rice Terraces before 9am. Kecak fire dance at Ubud Palace.
Skip This
The Monkey Forest. Overpriced, the monkeys are aggressive, and the "forest" is tiny.
🏄

Seminyak & Canggu

Beach clubs, surf, and restaurants

Bali's most developed beach strip. International food scene, beach clubs, surf breaks. It's pleasant but doesn't show you what makes Bali extraordinary.

Do This
Sunset at Potato Head Beach Club. Morning surf lesson at Canggu. Echo Beach for a quieter crowd.
Skip This
Kuta. It's loud, crowded, and represents the worst of mass tourism. Legian is marginally better.
🌅

South Bali (Bukit Peninsula)

Uluwatu, cliff temples, and empty beaches

The limestone headland south of Kuta has the best beaches near the airport — Balangan, Bingin, and Padang Padang are all worth it. Uluwatu Temple and its Kecak dance are highlights.

Do This
Uluwatu Temple at sunset + Kecak dance. Jimbaran Bay seafood dinner. Morning swim at Balangan beach.
Skip This
GWK Cultural Park. The giant Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue is impressive from a distance — the park itself is touristy filler.
🦅

Nusa Penida

Day trips, dramatic cliffs, and marine life

Just 45 minutes by fast boat from Sanur. Kelingking cliff viewpoint is the most dramatic landscape in Bali, and Manta Point delivers near-guaranteed manta ray encounters.

Do This
West coast circuit: Kelingking, Angel's Billabong, Broken Beach. Morning snorkel at Manta Point.
Skip This
Crystal Bay for swimming — the current is dangerous. Go for the viewpoint.

Bali Essentials — FAQ

Do I need a visa for Bali?

Most nationalities get a free Visa on Arrival (VoA) at Bali's Ngurah Rai airport for stays up to 30 days. It can be extended once for another 30 days. US, UK, Australian, Canadian, and EU passport holders all qualify.

What currency does Bali use?

Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). $1 USD ≈ Rp16,000. Withdraw from ATMs at major banks (BCA, Mandiri, BRI) — avoid airport ATMs which charge high fees. Some tourist areas accept USD but rates are unfavorable.

How do I get around Bali?

Grab (the regional Uber equivalent) works well in Ubud and south Bali. For day trips, hire a private driver for the day (Rp400,000–600,000) — cheaper than a series of Grabs and more flexible. Motorbike rental is easy but the roads and traffic make it risky for inexperienced riders.

When is the best time to visit Bali?

April–October is dry season, with July–August being peak tourist season (book everything 2–3 months ahead). May–June and September are ideal — good weather and smaller crowds. November–March is wet season, but rain usually comes as afternoon showers, not all-day rain.

Is Bali safe?

Yes, for general travel. Common issues: bag snatching on motorbikes (keep bags on the side away from traffic), temple touts, and aggressive taxi drivers at the airport. Use Grab instead of taxis, be alert with belongings, and you'll have few issues.

How much does a trip to Bali cost?

Budget: $50–80/day (guesthouses, warungs, public transport). Mid-range: $120–200/day (boutique hotels, restaurants, private drivers). Comfort: $250–500/day (villas, beach clubs, private tours). Bali is remarkably affordable by Western standards.
